Contactless Credit Cards to Be Presented at the Olympics'2012
The lucky visitors of the next Olympics'2012 in London are going to be twice as lucky because they will not have to carry money with them! Visa, the official credit card provider for the next Olympics, promises that all the purchases will be cashless in the Olympic village. What is more, Visa company announced they will issue quite a number of contactless credit cards which need only swiping over a reader. Thus, a transaction will take no more than a few seconds. Credit cards for quick and safe purchases are going to be used on public transport and will work as entrance cards for different events.
Visa is planning to use 2021 London Olympics as a great chance to introduce the new wireless payment technology. 'Wave and pay' plastics are going to bring in innovation into worldwide electronic payment network. It is going to be really fantastic: each and every Olympic venue will be provided with contact-free reader and al the visitors will enjoy cashless purchases. Those who own no Visa credit card, will be presented with pre-paid Visas.
The new contactless technology was first put into practice in 2007 in the UK, when Visa company cooperated with a number of banking leaders such as Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds TSB and others. Over 100,000 plastics with the new technology attached have already been issued to consumers. Credit cards of this type are provided with a chip with 128-bit encryption which keeps the cardholder's information - just like a common credit card's magnetic stripe. When the card is as close to the reader as an inch, the information is scanned and the payment is processed. Each transaction is given a unique identifier which is hard to be forged.
There are already 5 thousand retailers, including shops and eating places that have agreed to use the new payment technology. In future Visa is hoping to see more than 12,000 retailers joined to the payWave network.
During the Olympic Games, you will be able to make no more than $10 payment with the contactless plastics. Thus Visa is going to demonstrate that consumer credit cards are quite a way to make small purchases. Besides, they plan to destroy the widespread conviction that plastic payments are slower and less safe than cash.
In future, contactless rewards cards are going to become the most popular choice for purchasing at busy crowded places like fast food cafes, grocery stores, public transport etc. low value payments will be more convenient and fast with payWave. What is more, the new technology can be introduced for parking meters, vending machines and the like.
