Credit cards are a convenience. However, very often people face too high charges for it: an interest rate and a bunch of fees can sometimes darken the benefits of a credit card and make it hard to cope with.
In many cases, when searching for a plastic, people are eager to find best credit card offers with no fees and evaluate bank products by the fees they have. Of course, most consumers would like to obtain a credit card without any fees. Is it really possible and what fees can be detected with a bank offer?
As you search through the credit card market, you will see there are numbers of offers and it is no easy matter to pick up a really beneficial one. Banks happen to introduce their products as having no annual fee, no balance transfer or foreign exchange fee, and attach an attractive frill of rewards. At a closer look, some great credit card offers appear to have hidden fees and it is hard for the applicants to notice the tricks.
All the features and details of a bank credit card can be found in the Terms and Conditions document, or disclosures, which give the real picture of what the plastic is like. Reading the disclosures, you are sure to get the right impression of the bank card and detect all the possible hidden fees and charges. Read on to learn what the usual card fees are and how dangerous they can be.
Annual fee
Lenders charge this fee on a yearly basis as a fixed payment for bank card usage. No matter how often you use the card, you will have to pay this fee which can vary from $15-20 to a hundred and more, depending on the class of a plastic. Many banks present no annual fee plastics, which, however, require good payment score. Generally, cardholders with limited or average credit have to pay the annual fee.
Late payment fee
Lenders hate it when their customers are late with their payments. This is why a late payment fee is always charged when you forget to make another payment. This fee can be as high as the bank wants and it is really one of the most hated charges. However, some banks present special offers which imply no fees if you are late.
Over the limit fee
As the previous one, this is another penalty fee. You have to pay it in case you exceed your spending limit which is considered to be a significant delinquency. If you go over the limit, your payment score will be also damaged. This is why it is so important to know what your spending limit and used credit is.
Balance transfer fee
Balance transfers, though being very popular among those who want to save on payments, are not that beneficial when you are charged a fee. Few banks have credit cards without balance transfer fees, so should better search for them. With a balance transfer fee, you will have to pay 2-5% of the amount transferred, which is rather costly!
Foreign exchange fee
People often use credit cards when traveling abroad. Besides, you can use your plastic when purchasing at foreign websites. Many cards include foreign exchange of up to 3% of the transaction amount. There are lenders, however, which provide plastics without fees for foreign transactions. So, if you are planning a trip, watch out for this fee!
Cash advance fee
This fee is crucial for those who are in the habit of using cash advance from time to time. Most banks, excluding just a few issuers, set the cash advance fee. This charge is rather high, plus you will have to pay a special high interest rate if you use your card at the ATM. Leave this service for emergency cases only.
