Credit Card Safety

Have you ever shopped online? If not, you should know that about 80% of Internet users have made purchases online at least once. There are a number of essential reasons for the great popularity of online shopping. First of all, it is quick, which is very important for busy people who are constantly trying to save time. Another advantage of online purchases is convenience. You only have to open a web page and look through the list of products, put them into a virtual shopping cart and make a payment. Your purchases will be delivered right to your doorstep!

However, in spite of all these benefits, many people still feel hesitant and suspicious of online shopping. And they have reasons for that!

The main thing that threatens consumers is the danger of identity theft which became a widespread occurrence these days. While the most popular tool for making payments at online shops is a credit card, consumers consider it a risk to enter their credit card details online. Some online shops provide cash back credit cards and low interest rate plastics to attract customers to online shopping. Are online purchases really dangerous and can you protect yourself?

Generally, online shopping was designed to be safe and convenient. Online shops and sales use a number of technologies to protect the users' credit card information and make the transaction as quick as possible. However, every conscientious shopper should stick to some simple credit safety rules.

1. If you want to buy something online, choose the online shops with good rating and reliability. Look at the website and get a general impression of it. There should be contact information, privacy police and all other important disclosures on the site. Besides, it is necessary that the site is protected with security protocols, like SSL. This is usually testified by a special sign at the page and 'https' instead of the usual 'http' in the address bar of the webpage where payments are processed.

2. Evaluating the sites' reliability, pay attention to the encryption sign ('padlock') on the browser's status bar. If the padlock is locked, this points at the fact that the site encrypts your information. In case of an open padlock be sure that the web source you looking through is not protected and secure, that is someone else can access your data. In the latter case you can fall victim of ID theft.

3. Read the terms and conditions and privacy policy of the website, make sure you get the full understanding of what is written. This will disclose the way this online seller will dispose of your personal information. Shady websites can sell your data to third parties and the 'best' result of this can be tons of spam on your e-mail. Choose online stores that enable you to keep credit card information safe from third parties.

4. As you made a purchase, save all the purchase records on your computer. This will help you protect your credit and money in case of identity theft or undelivered orders. According to law, the seller must deliver your online order within 30 days. If they fail to do this, they must warn you about the delay.

5. Keep your computer safe. Install anti-malware protection programs and update them regularly so that Trojans and other spyware could be detected in time.
