Zero Percent Credit Card Applications to Save, Save, Save!
Credit card companies want as many customers as they can get. A person with excellent credit, good credit and sometimes just fair credit is seen as a highly sought after prize in the highly competitive world of credit cards. Because of this interest in card holders, many credit card companies are coming out with credit card offers that are attached with zero percent interest rates. Zero percent interest rates (and other low rate, fee free cards) are a great way for the average consumer to save money and stay out of debt. When used correctly, a credit card can be a powerful tool.
Here’s how zero percent rates operate: Usually a credit card company comes out with a top credit card offer that will allow you transfer a current balance (on another card) onto their zero percent card for a specific amount of time. Usually this time period is for 6 to 15 months. During this time the card holder will not pay any interest on that balance — as long as they do not buy any new purchases with the card. This could in effect save the card holder hundreds of dollars per year!
Zero percent credit cards are not offered to everyone though. Usually you can only get one if you have excellent credit or if your credit score show that you have made responsible financial decisions in your life. However, even if you have bad credit there are still plenty of credit card offers for bad credit out on the market. If you have a zero percent unsecured credit card here are a few restrictions/ fees you should look out for:
- Fees that get charged to transfer balances are an issue that occurs often. Many times fees are set as a percent of the balance and they come with minimum payments. You don’t want to pay this!
- Introductory periods do not last forever so you should not expect them to! If you are aware of when you’re introductory, zero percent interest rate periods are up then you will hopefully avoid paying the huge interest charges that can come after them.
- Late fees can be pretty severe on zero percent interest cards on transferred balances. If you just pay late one time you may lose your zero percent interest. Be careful and make sure your bills are paid on time just to avoid this from happening to you.
- New purchases are where most people get in trouble with credit cards. For a zero percent credit card any new purchases made will take the zero percent rate away while your transferred balance will assume the regular APR until your new purchases are made. Many people get second credit cards just to keep this from happening to them.
Zero percent credit cards can be a great opportunity for you to get out of debt and to capitalize on your payments but only if you use them properly. If you misuse zero percent rates then you can not only hurt yourself now, in the short term, but in the long term in regards to your credit score.
